This is a guest review by Alex Zenk.
The Shepherds’ Conference launched in 2001 at Grace Community Church, home of Pastor John MacArthur. During the past 19 conferences, many themes, and extraordinary messages have been delivered. Due to the success of this conference and the attention it draws, John took on the task to compile a collection of some of the best sermons and lectures given into an easy to read book, broken up by the individual sermons. He adds this book to complete his Shepherd series which now totals four books, pulling sermons from the prior three to complete this project. The prior three books were broken into specific themes, The Shepherd as Preacher, The Shepherd as Leader, and The Shepherd as Theologian. John combines these three books into one, giving readers the ability to go through all three parts in one large easy to read book.
Today, more so than ever before, churches need to have biblically strong men in the pulpit leading their congregations. Not only do we need strong teachers of the word, we need those individuals to have that same life outside of the church and in the community. We need these men to raise up a new generation of believers and be an example of how to live out the calls of the gospel. The bible holds leaders and pastors an incredible high standard, establishing guidelines for how pastors and elders are to behavior and live out their lives. The purpose of this collection of 35 sermons is to help guide pastors, elders, or laymen in the church, or anyone to be more effective in their spiritual walk. There are sermons on integrity and how to hold yourself to the same standard behind closed doors of your house as you do while in the community. You will also read how to interpret and apply God’s word accurately to your daily live to pursue the holy life we are called to. This collection is a fantastic collection to any leader’s library as it humble them in their approach to leading others through a biblical worldview. The John MacArthur Handbook of Effective Biblical Leadership is a much-needed book to help young and old leaders in the church to help set themselves up to live and lead in a biblical manner.
This collection of sermons has been refreshing to read, as you will encounter many different perspectives of how to live out the scriptures in your daily life. The reader will encounter sermons from John Piper, Steven Lawson, RC Sproul and many more. This work will truly empower anyone and humble them as they take the charge to become a biblical leader. I highly recommend this book to any person inside our outside of ministry to read many times through and allow the word of God to be implanted on their hearts.
